Teachers are paying closer attention to their salaries following concerns raised by some colleagues about deductions in March 2026.

While there has been no official announcement of salary reductions, changes in take-home pay can still happen and in many cases, there are clear reasons behind them.

If you are a teacher, this is what you need to know.

What We Know So Far
  • Some teachers reported lower take-home pay in March 2026
  • There has been no official communication from GES or the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) confirming salary cuts
  • The situation is most likely linked to payroll adjustments and deductions

This means what you see on your payslip may not necessarily be a permanent reduction.

Why Your Salary May Be Lower in April 2026

Even without any official salary cut, several factors can affect how much you actually receive.

1. Payroll Adjustments and Corrections

At times, the payroll system makes corrections to previous payments.

This may happen if:

  • You were overpaid earlier
  • Your salary scale or step was updated
  • There were calculation inconsistencies

When this happens, the system may recover the excess gradually, reducing your current salary.

2. Arrears Payments and Recalculations

Many teachers are receiving or expecting arrears due to promotions, postings, or adjustments.

However:

  • Arrears are subject to tax
  • Adjustments may be applied after payment

This can make your current salary appear lower, even though you benefited earlier.

3. Increased PAYE (Tax) Deductions

If your gross salary increases even temporarily, your PAYE may also increase.

This means:

  • Your income rises on paper
  • But your take-home pay may not increase proportionally

For instance, a teacher whose salary moves from GH₵4,800 to GH₵5,200 may enter a higher tax bracket, leading to higher deductions and a lower-than-expected net salary.

4. SSNIT and Statutory Deduction Adjustments

All government workers contribute to statutory deductions such as SSNIT.

If corrections are made, your deductions may increase slightly in a given month.

For example, adjustments to previous SSNIT contributions may result in slightly higher deductions in April, reducing take-home pay.

5. Loan and Third-Party Deductions

If you have:

  • A salary-backed loan
  • Welfare deductions
  • Union contributions

Changes in repayment structure or full activation of deductions can reduce your salary.

Why This Is Happening Now

What many are seeing now is largely about timing, not new policy changes.

  • Some deductions that were delayed are now being applied
  • Payroll corrections are being processed
  • Effects of arrears, taxes, or loans are now fully reflecting

In simple terms, April salaries may be reflecting accumulated adjustments rather than fresh deductions.

Why Not All Teachers Will Be Affected

Not every teacher will experience a reduction.

You may not be affected if:

  • Your payroll data is stable
  • You have no arrears adjustments
  • You have no active deductions
What You Should Do If You Notice a Reduction

If your salary appears lower than expected:

✅ Check your payslip carefully
✅ Look for new or increased deductions
✅ Compare with previous months
✅ Contact your district office if necessary

In most cases, these changes are temporary and explainable.
