GNAT Threatens Strike in Adenta Over Alleged Assault on Teacher at Bethel Presby JHS
Teachers in the Adenta Municipality may refuse to resume when schools reopen for the new term following an alleged assault on a teacher at Bethel Presby JHS.
In a strongly worded letter dated 17th April 2026, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Madina-Adenta-Abokobi Secretariat, expressed serious concern over what it described as increasing attacks on teachers in the municipality.
According to the statement, the incident happened on 8th April 2026 during a mock examination at Bethel Presby Junior High School.
GNAT said a former student was found in a classroom allegedly picking pupils’ bags. He was reportedly confronted by a teacher, Mr. Mohammed Abdela, who was invigilating the examination.
The suspect allegedly refused to leave immediately, later departed, and reportedly threatened to return.
The association claims the individual later returned with a group of young men on motorbikes and allegedly assaulted the teacher.
GNAT said another teacher intervened to prevent more serious harm, after which the victim was escorted to the East Legon Police Station to lodge an official complaint.
A police medical form was reportedly issued, and a medical report was later submitted to the Police CID for investigations.
GNAT Angry Over Delay in Arrests
GNAT stated that on 14th April 2026, its District Secretary accompanied the victim to the police station to press for quick action.
The union said police assured them the suspects would be arrested and arraigned before court promptly.
However, GNAT claims that as of 17th April 2026, no arrests had been made despite intelligence reportedly provided to police by the victim and concerned citizens.
Teachers May Boycott Reopening
The association has now warned that teachers in the Adenta Municipality will not resume duty when schools reopen until the alleged culprits are arrested and brought before court.
GNAT said it would not compromise on the safety of its members.
Why This Matters
The latest development raises fresh concerns about teacher safety in schools and whether educators are adequately protected while performing their duties.
If the impasse is not resolved quickly, reopening in parts of Adenta could face disruption.
